Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

School-based events, including debates, cultural days, sports competitions, and talent shows, play a pivotal role in youth development by providing platforms for skill acquisition, social interaction, and leadership development. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, these events serve as avenues for students to explore their talents, foster teamwork, and build confidence. According to Bello and Yusuf (2024), school-based events contribute to holistic education by complementing classroom learning with practical experiences. They also promote civic values, cultural appreciation, and healthy competition among students. Despite their potential, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor planning, and lack of stakeholder engagement can hinder the effectiveness of these events. This study evaluates the contribution of school-based events to youth development in Minna, highlighting their benefits, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While school-based events hold significant potential for youth development, their impact in Minna is often undermined by issues such as inadequate resources, limited participation, and lack of alignment with educational goals. These challenges can result in poorly executed events that fail to achieve their developmental objectives. Previous studies have explored the role of extracurricular activities in education, but there is limited research on the specific contribution of school-based events to youth development in Minna (Abdullahi & Suleiman, 2023). This study seeks to address this gap by examining the role of school-based events in fostering youth development in Minna Local Government Area.
