Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

School-based events, including debates, cultural days, sports competitions, and talent shows, play a pivotal role in youth development by providing platforms for skill acquisition, social interaction, and leadership development. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, these events serve as avenues for students to explore their talents, foster teamwork, and build confidence. According to Bello and Yusuf (2024), school-based events contribute to holistic education by complementing classroom learning with practical experiences. They also promote civic values, cultural appreciation, and healthy competition among students. Despite their potential, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor planning, and lack of stakeholder engagement can hinder the effectiveness of these events. This study evaluates the contribution of school-based events to youth development in Minna, highlighting their benefits, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
